Having sleepless nights? Here are the main causes of insomnia

by Sergio Miller

Insomnia – a sleep disorder that causes disruption in one’s sleeping pattern. Expert medical publication Mayo Clinic reveals that people who suffer from insomnia often have a difficult time either falling or maintaining proper sleep.

Other symptoms also include falling waking up extremely early, feeling tired, depressed or anxious, and finding it extremely difficult to focus or remember specific tasks.

The health and wellness hub, Healthline, further reveals that at least 6 to 10 per cent of adults experience symptoms severe enough to meet the diagnostic criteria for insomnia disorder.

This therefore gives us every reason to believe that this disorder if left untreated can pose several challenges in one’s day-to-day life.

To further understand why this affects so many people we have provided a list of things which causes people to have difficulty sleeping.

Here are a few:

Provocation

Provocation refers to things people often do prior to going to bed that trigger our minds to stay active. Very Well Health – an online medical publication – explains that these triggers could be caused by several different things such as drinking alcohol or caffeine before bed, having a television or pet in the bedroom or being tasked with the responsibility of performing nighttime duties like feeding your infant.

Life changes

Another well-known medical publication, Cleveland Clinic, adds that significant life changes can have an effect on the quality of sleep that one receives. Major life changes often cause people to become stressed or depressed which acts as a trigger.

Medication

The above-mentioned publication also adds that certain medications might result in experiencing certain side effects which later have an effect on your sleep.
