Running is a rewarding activity. It is a fantastic way to stay healthy, boost your mood and enjoy the outdoors. However, safety should always come first.

As a runner, it is important to do what you can to ensure that your runs are safe, enjoyable and injury-free.

Here are some essential safety tips every runner should keep in mind:

Plan your route carefully

Choose well-lit, populated routes, especially if you run early in the morning or late at night. Avoid isolated areas and unfamiliar trails.

Use maps or running apps to plan routes and share your plan with a trusted friend or family member.

Wear appropriate gear

Invest in a good pair of running shoes that fit well and provide adequate support. Ensure that you dress for the weather, and choose gear that is bright or reflective as it increases visibility during low-light runs.

Carry a flashlight or headlamp if running in the dark to see where you’re going and to be seen by others.

Be aware of your surroundings

Be alert and limit distractions like listening to loud music or using your phone excessively.

Be mindful of traffic, cyclists and pedestrians. It also helps to make eye contact with drivers before crossing streets.

Follow the rules of the road

Run on sidewalks or designated running paths when available. If running on the road, run against traffic so you can see oncoming vehicles.

Run with a buddy or in a group

Running with others increases safety, provides motivation and helps in case of emergencies. If running alone, inform someone of your route and expected return time.

Listen to your body

Pay attention to signs of fatigue, dehydration or injury. Don’t push through pain. Rather, rest and seek medical advice if needed.

Practice personal safety

Be cautious when running in secluded areas or at odd hours. Trust your instincts. If something feels off, change your route or cut your run short. Trust your gut and stay safe.
