Cuticle care routine, tips and oils

Your cuticles may be small, but they play a big role in maintaining strong, healthy nails. Ignoring them can lead to dryness, hangnails, and even infections.

By incorporating a simple cuticle care routine into your self-care regimen, you can keep your nails looking flawless and your hands soft and well-groomed.

Here’s everything you need to know about taking care of your cuticles, why it matters, and the best oils to keep them nourished.

Why cuticle health matters

Cuticles act as a protective barrier between your nails and the surrounding skin, preventing bacteria and fungi from entering. When your cuticles are dry, cracked, or damaged, they become vulnerable to infections, which can lead to painful swelling and unhealthy nails. Healthy cuticles contribute to stronger, faster-growing nails and enhance the overall appearance of your hands.

How to take care of your cuticles

Keep them moisturised

Just like the rest of your skin, your cuticles need hydration. Use a cuticle oil or a rich hand cream daily to keep them soft and nourished.

Avoid cutting your cuticles

Many people mistakenly cut or trim their cuticles, which can lead to irritation and infections. Instead, gently push them back after a warm shower or bath when they are soft.

Use a gentle exfoliant

Once or twice a week, exfoliate your cuticles using a scrub or a soft toothbrush to remove dead skin and promote circulation.

Wear gloves for protection

Household chores, especially those involving water and chemicals, can dry out your cuticles. Wearing gloves while cleaning or washing dishes helps maintain moisture.

Stay hydrated and eat a balanced diet

Drinking enough water and consuming foods rich in vitamins and minerals (such as biotin and vitamin E) contribute to overall nail and cuticle health.

The best oils for cuticle care

Using natural oils is one of the best ways to keep your cuticles soft and nourished. Here are some of the top choices:

  • Jojoba oil – This oil is deeply moisturising and closely mimics the skin’s natural oils, making it perfect for cuticle hydration.
  • Coconut oil – Known for its antibacterial properties, coconut oil helps prevent infections while keeping the cuticles soft and supple.
  • Vitamin E oil – Packed with antioxidants, vitamin E oil helps repair damaged cuticles and promotes nail growth.
  • Olive oil – A readily available and effective option, olive oil deeply conditions cuticles and strengthens nails.
  • Almond oil – Rich in fatty acids, almond oil helps soften dry cuticles and prevent peeling.
