Can a simple burp cause chest pain? Here’s what you should know

A simple burp is normally not a cause for concern, although it is regarded as a normal bodily function, it can occasionally cause unanticipated discomfort.

It can sometimes indicate underlying digestive, gastric, or even heartburn problems.

It is mentioned by Medical News Today, “People may describe gas pain in the chest as a tightness or discomfort in the chest area. There may be a slight burning or stabbing sensation, and the pain may move to the abdomen.”

Chest pain may be caused by heartburn that usually manifests as a burning, stinging feeling that travels upward from the stomach. It happens when stomach acid seeps into the oesophagus, the health news publication also states.

The health source mentioned above further adds that it might also be a symptom of food intolerance. Two such causes are gluten intolerance and lactose intolerance. Excessive burping, bloating, and stomach pain can occur in people who lack the enzymes needed to break down specific foods.

According to New Health Advisor, “Irritable bowel syndrome is also known as IBS. Researchers aren’t completely sure what causes it and it affects the large part of the colon. It can cause both burping along with chest pain along with abdominal cramping, chronic constipation or diarrhoea, and gas and belching.”

It’s generally nothing to worry about if you experience mild chest or abdominal pain with burping and it goes away. However, you must seek emergency medical attention if the discomfort persists or gets worse, the health website explains.

It is further suggested by the above source to ask a medical professional for some home care advice. Some suggestions include:

  • Stay away from greasy and spicy foods.
  • At night, raise your bed’s head.
  • Try to avoid drinking beverages during meals and instead have them afterwards.
