Building a healthy sustainable lifestyle post addiction

by Ashia Nkontsa

Rebuilding your life post addiction can be brutal to some people, others even struggle to fit in and redefining themselves again takes time.

A healthy lifestyle requires many things, for example, getting your mindset right, finding healthy habits that can replace the old and getting back to your old self pre-addiction.

There are prescribed ways you can take on if you’re one of the people who want to take better care of their lives. South Coast Recovery Centre advises on the following in order to leave a healthy lifestyle after substance abuse.

Remove yourself from stressful situations

Stress can trigger your recovery process, exercising and finding stress free activities to do will help you live a relaxed free life.

Sleeping is important

Recovering addicts often complain about sleep deprivation, find a routine that will help you and try to stick to it. As time goes your body will adjust.

Find ways to improve your mood

Mood swings are part of the process, hang around people that possess good energy and find peaceful ways that will lift up your mood.

Build a strong immune system

People who have had addictions have weak immune systems, therefore it is easy for them to catch diseases. Focus on nutrition and exercise to help improve your immune system.

Getting over an addiction is one of the difficult things in life, having a mindset to forgive yourself. “Do not blame yourself or feel ashamed of how you experienced something that happened. To forgive yourself is not the same as forgetting your mistakes. Rather it’s a choice to acknowledge that they are here and to move forward.” -says Recovery Centre
