Benefits of fish oil for women

Fish oil is known to have many health benefits due to its omega-3 fatty acid content. It is trusted to treat and manage conditions such as heart illnesses, and eye health, as well as helping with skin issues.

As its name suggests, it is oil from fish and the WebMD states that “Fish that are especially rich in these oils include mackerel, herring, tuna, and salmon.” This oil is said to be rich in omega-3 fatty acids like EPA and DHA which can reduce pain, and swelling, and prevent blood clotting.

These are benefits that can be gained by anyone using the oil, but there are those specifically available for women. Here are they, as explained by health publications:

Prevents osteoporosis: According to HealthXChange, women are at higher risk of osteoporosis, especially after menopause due to estrogen drop. It is then stated that omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oil, may prevent osteoporosis, potentially enhanced with calcium supplementation. “Two systematic reviews published in 2012 and 2019 reported potential benefits of omega-3 fatty acids on bone mineral density, one of the reviews suggests that this effect may be enhanced concurrently with calcium supplementation.”

Supports pregnancy: Early development, especially in the first trimester of pregnancy and beyond, depends on omega-3 fatty acids, states Healthline. The publication mentions that supplementing with fish oil during pregnancy or lactation may enhance the child’s cognitive development. “Taking fish oil supplements during pregnancy and nursing may also improve infant visual development and help reduce the risk of allergies.”

Helps in PMS and menstruation: The Natalist states that omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil have been found to have positive effects on premenstrual syndrome (PMS), a condition experienced just before menstruation characterised by mood swings, irritability, and anxiety. It is said that omega-3 fatty acids supplementation may reduce depression, anxiety, bloating, headache, and breast tenderness associated with PMS, and may also reverse painful menstruation symptoms caused by an imbalance of certain fatty acids.
