Ginger is one of the healthiest spices you can find.

Belonging to the Zingiberaceae family, ginger is closely related to turmeric, cardamom, and galangal. The spice can either be used fresh, dried, powdered or as an oil or juice, says Healthline.

As unique as ginger is, it is beneficial for one’s health.

Here are 5 ginger health benefits by WebMD that you should consider.

  • Soothes sore muscles: It may not take the pain away but it will soothe it. According to studies, people experiencing exercise-related muscle aches and consumed ginger had less pain the following day than those who did not.
  • Lowers blood sugar levels: A small study suggested that ginger may help the body use insulin better. However, larger studies are still needed to see if ginger helps to improve blood sugar levels.
  • Helps ease menstrual pains: Ginger powder may help to ease those cramps. Studies have shown that women who took 1500 milligrams of the powder for three days during their cycle experienced less pain than those who did not.
  • Relieves indigestion: Ginger can bring relief to those who live with chronic indigestion. If you take ginger before your meals, it could help to empty your system faster, leaving less time for food to cause unwanted problems.
  • Fights germs: Fresh ginger has certain chemical compounds that help to keep germs at bay. It is especially good at slowing down bacteria such as E.coli and shigella. Fresh ginger may also help to ward off viruses like RSV.
