Colourful Braids

by Keletso Modisakeng

Coloured hair extensions have become a growing trend, and we can’t help but admire them. Our favourite celebrities share their looks –some nail it and show us how to do it correctly, while others have missed it.

The songstress is never short of natural hairstyles and boy does she look good. Brandy plays it safe by using blue-black hair extensions for her box braids, which look ordinary until light shines on them. This is a great look for people who want to ease into colours, but don’t want to go drastic on the first trial. The blue-black shade best suits people with a cocoa and darker skin tone.

When the grey hair alert popped up, people questioned it and now everyone seems to be on board. Greying isn’t seen as ageing or looking old, but a bold hair statement. Go grey like Pearl if you have dark natural hair which will serve as dark roots and avoid your skin picking up the shade and having a dull finish.

Raven-Symoné

Have fun and play with colour, texture and style like Raven. Her hair is a bold move that will play out better with the younger you. This is more a holiday and carefree than a normal day-to-day look.

DJ Doowap

This YFM DJ is one of our least favourites. We would have loved her hair more without the blue streak and extra-long length. Coloured braids are bright as is and the neater they are, the better.

Willow Smith

To some, a bright blonde seems normal yet others would always shy away from it. Give your hair a tease by adding a few platinum blonde braids to add character. The youngest of the Smith family has always been a wild child when it comes to hairstyles and we adore the yellow cornrows. Keep your natural hair a dark shade and plait your hair with a coloured hair piece. The dark roots will give the cornrows an ombré finish.
