Why Princess Diana’s ’90s Breakfast Is TikTok’s Latest Obsession

by Zaghrah Anthony

TikTok has a magical way of turning the past into the present. Songs from the 1960s, forgotten fashion moments, and even decades-old meals suddenly become the latest viral content. Case in point: Princess Diana’s breakfast routine from the ’90s, now affectionately called the “Princess Breakfast.”

From fashion icons to foodies, the internet can’t seem to get enough of Diana’s understated elegance—even when it comes to her morning meal.

@eatingbirdfood Princess Diana’s former chef recently shared her go-to breakfast on YouTube… and it’s going viral for good reason. 🥣✨ The oats are soaked in orange juice (yes, really!) then mixed with Greek yogurt, lemon juice, cinnamon, grated apple and blueberries. Then they’re topped with walnuts for a little crunch and a drizzle of honey for sweetness. I’m not an orange juice lover so I wasn’t sure I would love these, but the citrus flavor grew on me. I will say that these oats a bit higher in carbs and sugar, but they do pack a decent amount of protein (20 grams) and fiber (8 grams). Definitely a fun recipe to try if you’re looking to switch up your bfast. Here is how to make them: • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats • 1 cup orange juice, freshly squeezed or store-bought • 1 cup Greek yogurt, or dairy-free yogurt • 1 tablespoon honey, or maple syrup • Juice of ½ lemon • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon • ½ Honeycrisp apple, grated • 1 cup fresh blueberries, reserve some for topping • ¼ cup toasted walnuts, chopped 1. Add the rolled oats and orange juice to a medium bowl or jar. Stir to combine. Cover and refrigerate overnight (or at least 4 hours) so the oats soften and absorb the liquid. 2. In the morning, add the Greek yogurt, honey, lemon juice and cinnamon to the oats. Stir well. 3. Mix in the grated apple and blueberries. Taste and add more honey if desired. Portion into two bowls and top with toasted walnuts and additional blueberries. Enjoy! #overnightoats #princessdiana #protein #breakfast #oats ♬ Clementine – Sun Room

From Kensington Palace to Your Kitchen

Back in the ’90s, overnight oats were Diana’s breakfast of choice, made fresh each morning by her personal chef, Darren McGrady. This wholesome, nourishing meal reflected Diana’s growing focus on health and mindful eating.

According to McGrady, she enjoyed a simple yet elegant combination: rolled oats soaked overnight, folded with Greek yoghurt, fresh fruit, and a drizzle of honey. Even then, it was practical, photogenic, and subtly luxurious—the perfect reflection of her effortless style.

TikTok creator Karissa Stevens recently shared a recreation of Diana’s oats, sparking millions of views. One user wrote, “Princess Diana was always that girl,” capturing the fascination with Diana’s graceful, everyday habits.

A Meal with History

Long before it went viral, overnight oats had a history of their own. Known as Birchermüesli, the dish was invented in Switzerland by Dr. Maximilian Bircher-Benner in the late 19th century. He created it as a nourishing, simple meal for patients, combining oats with milk, lemon juice, and fruit a precursor to the modern overnight oats trend that now dominates breakfast feeds worldwide.

For Diana, these oats were not just food, they were part of a broader journey toward health. After her struggles with bulimia became public in the early ’90s, Diana embraced meals that were both balanced and satisfying. Sharing her story brought awareness to eating disorders and inspired others to prioritise well-being.

How to Make Your Own Princess Breakfast

If you want to channel a touch of royal energy at your morning table, here’s Darren McGrady’s recipe for Diana’s favourite oats:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup rolled oats

  • 1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice

  • 1 cup Greek yoghurt

  • 1 Honeycrisp apple

  • Blueberries and walnuts for topping

  • Honey, to taste

Method:

  1. Soak rolled oats in orange juice overnight in the fridge.

  2. In the morning, fold in Greek yoghurt and sweeten with honey.

  3. Grate a quarter of an apple and mix into the oats.

  4. Top with blueberries and walnuts. Enjoy your royal breakfast!

The Benefits Behind the Trend

Soaked overnight oats are more than a pretty breakfast. Nutritionists highlight several benefits:

  • Fuller for longer: Helps curb mid-morning cravings.

  • Nutri-dense: Soaking improves digestibility and nutrient absorption.

  • Gut-friendly: Retains resistant starch, acting as a prebiotic to support digestive health.

It’s little wonder the trend resonates so strongly. Nostalgia plays a role—revisiting Diana’s life connects people to a shared cultural memory, while the meal itself offers a modern, healthy, and customizable breakfast option.

Why We Can’t Get Enough

The “Princess Breakfast” isn’t just about oats, it’s about elegance, health, and the allure of Diana’s timeless grace. TikTok’s obsession shows that even small, everyday habits of a beloved icon can inspire millions decades later.

Whether it’s a drizzle of honey, a sprinkle of berries, or the simple act of soaking oats overnight, Diana’s breakfast reminds us that sometimes, the royals do get it right, even at the breakfast table.
