How to make fruit last longer

It is quite disheartening to find your freshly picked fruit losing its freshness just a few days later. 

One ends up wasting not only the fruit but the money spent on purchasing the fruit. 

Most people love to buy fruit that will last them at least 3 days to one week. But what happens when those grapes turn into raisins sooner than expected? 

Unlock Food suggests these tips to help keep your fruit fresher for longer: 

  • Most fruit is guaranteed to last longer if kept in its original packaging and in the fridge. These fruits include berries, grapes and apples. 
  • It is important to eat berries as soon as possible, avoid bulk buying berries. However, berries can last for a week if kept in the fridge. 
  • Plastic bags with tiny openings/holes are great for helping fruits stay fresher for longer by releasing moisture, poke tiny holes in plastics if you have to. This is great for blueberries, cherries, grapes and strawberries. 
  • Keep fruits in separate places in the fridge if possible. Apples can cause other fruits to ripen faster. 
  • Ensure to keep unripe fruit on the counter first before storing them in the fridge, once ripe then you can go ahead and store them in the fridge. Fruit that should ripen on the counter are apricots, avocados, guava, kiwi, mangoes, melons, nectarines, papaya, peaches, bananas and plums.
  • Lastly, you can freeze your fruit if you will not be eating it right away or have bought in bulk. Most fruits will be perfectly fine in the freezer for about a year. Frozen fruit is great for making smoothies, adding to hot cereal, using them in muffins and quick breads, mixing with yogurt, or making a fruit sauce for pancakes and waffles
