How your cellphone can ruin your relationship

by Ayanda Sithole
How your cell phone can ruin your relationship

According to studies, about 62% of people check their phones first thing in the morning. This is scary when you think of other useful things that could be done with your time. Cell phones have become an important part of our lives. But, if you don’t watch it, they could ruin your relationship.

While cell phones are an important gadget for communication, they can negatively affect relationships – from not communicating properly to not being present. However there are small tips to help you stay on track, despite the distraction of always being available.

Don’ts

Don’t say it’s over. When you’re upset, it’s easy to type out an SMS reading “we are over”. Your anger will probably pass, and you are likely to regret it. Breaking up over text is tacky; give people the decency of a face-to-face break-up. If you can’t do that, at least call them.

Don’t play detective. Lovers have a tendency of going through each other’s phone, especially when there are suspicions of cheating. Our advice is – don’t! A phone is private property. Even if you suspect someone is shady, looking through his or her phone rarely ends well.

Don’t overshare. So, you’ve just had the best sex of your life; don’t be tempted to pick up your phone and tell your BFF. Some moments are only meant for you and your lover. Just because you can quickly tell someone it doesn’t mean you should. Cell phones make it easy to say things quickly, but sometimes they lead to regret. If you can share your news so quickly what stops the next person from sharing it with others?

Do’s

Switch off sometimes. Put your phone on silent during quality time with your partner. It’s hard to have a romantic night when phones keep beeping and distracting. Switch it off sometimes; the WhatsApp groups will still be there when you switch it back on.

Seek clarity. When it comes to technology, a common misunderstanding is the absence of tone. Because SMSs and WhatsApp messages are written words, it is easy to misunderstand. Call someone if there is any misunderstanding; you will understand better when you hear the tone of their voice.

Keep it clean. Leaked nudes and sexy videos are no fun when they hit the internet, so make sure to keep your phone “clean”. You might think it is private, but phones easily get stolen. The last thing you want is to see your private moments being entertainment on the internet.
