How to date online

by Ayanda Sithole
The Bachelor reality tv show is coming to South Africa an will air on valentine's day

Your love life doesn’t have to consist of waiting for that special person to come along. With online  dating you don’t have to hope that you meet someone – you can take matters into your own hands.

By Zukiswa Dlamini

Dating expert, Thembi Zungu, says Tinder is one of the most popular apps but Facebook and Twitter can also set you on a path to find love.

1. The good bits. One of the fun things about online dating is that it allows you to get to know someone before having to commit to meeting them. It allows you to chat to the person throughout the day and get an idea of what the person is like. Another bonus is that it opens you up to a whole world of potential partners instead of meeting through friends or by chance.

2. Be careful. Like most things there is a bad side to online dating. Some people tend to not take it seriously which means that those that are serious about finding love end up having their time wasted. Some people lie about who they are which can open you up to predators

3. Prepare for disappointment. You might find that you get along well with someone online, but that doesn’t mean you will get along in real life. Because there is no face – to – face communication, it can be disappointing when you finally see the person in the flesh. Profile pictures don’t convey people’s mannerisms.

4. Matching with a rotten apple. Another problem you might face is meeting someone who will harass you by asking you to send naked pictures. These men often send rude and disrespectful messages when you don’t do what they want you to do. Dating sites can protect you from such incidences as opposed to social media.

5. Are you the one? Determining whether or not you want to open yourself up to the land of online dating is a personal choice. There’s no age limit for online dating because everyone of every age has a chance to meet their match. Make sure you don’t send personal information until you’re absolutely sure you that you can trust the person and meet in a public space. Also, don’t get addicted because you might miss out on finding the love of your life in real life because you are too busy online.
