Durban July Fashion Awards

by Ayanda Ngcobo

Let’s take a peek at who dazzled and who disappointed at the Vodacom Durban July.

Black Beauties: Zizo Beda, Bonnie Mbuli, Jessica Nkosi, Lorna Maseko, Khutso Theledi and Nomuzi Mabena

Instagram
Instagram

Jessica Nkosi gives us a bit of shimmer, with a touch of tulle to expose a bit of thigh.

Instagram
Instagram

Bonnie Mbuli decides to delve into the eccentric side of life in this out-of-the-box creation. She is all things dramatic and carries off her look with confidence. High five to her!

Instagram

Zizo and Omuhle Gela are underwhelming in simple crops and maxi skirts. The only stand out feature is Zizo’s statement neckpiece, but they both leave us wanting a whole lot more.

Instagram
Instagram

Nomuzi Mabena is queening in a floor length gown with a royal inspired cape. It’s a different side to her street look; she looks edgy and stunning.

Instagram
Instagram

Khutso’s gown has our eyes darting all over the place. There’s a lot going on with this dress leaving us a bit dizzy.

Instagram
Instagram

Unfortunately, we are not blown away by Lorna Maseko. The sheer and feather combination doesn’t work for us and we feel her figure could be shown off in something more exciting.

The winner: Nomuzi Mabena

Instagram
Instagram

We giving this one to Nomuzi Mabena, who pulls off something different with style and grace.

Red hot ladies: Simphiwe Ngema, Tumi Morake, Nomzamo Mbatha

Instagram
Instagram

Simphiwe Ngema is poised and ladylike in her outfit choice. The A-line skirt gives her body a nice shape.

Instagram
Instagram

We think Tumi’s dress sits really well on her and red is definitely a complementary shade against her skin. She radiates elegance. Nice one!

Instagram
Instagram

Nomzamo is fiery hot in a figure hugging floor length gown with a cape. Although the cape has made many appearances on the carpet, it hasn’t lost its appeal yet and she is all things high fashion in this look.

Winner: Nomzamo Mbatha

Instagram
Instagram

It’s safe to say Nomzamo heats up the red carpet in her feisty number.

Monochrome Magic: Luthando Shosha and Boity Thulo

Instagram
Instagram

Can you say dramatic? King Loot looks like she’s stepped straight off the set of the Matrix Reloaded as she serves us androgyny on fleek. Like it or leave it, she has tongues wagging and heads turning.

Instagram
Instagram

We don’t often see Boity in a suit, which is a shame because she pulls it off so well. This outfit is classy and chic.

Winner: Boity Thulo

Instagram
Instagram

This one goes to Ms. Thulo who is faultless from head to toe, and slays with ease.

Blue ice: Phindile Gwala and Mampho Brescia

Instagram
Instagram

Phindile give us an example of how not to wear sheer. The over-exposed cheeky shorts, open back detail and hint of cleavage all lead to a disastrous outcome.

Winner: Mampho Brescia

Instagram
Instagram

By virtue of having no competition, Mampho takes first place in the breezy blue ensembles. We must add though that her outfit does nothing for us.

White wonders: Terry Pheto, Denise Zimba, Khanyi Mbau, Florence Mokgatsi

Instagram
Instagram

The ombre detail of Terry’s dress gives it an interesting finish. The only thing that throws us off is the choker accessory as it makes her look uncomfortable.

Instagram
Instagram

Ms Mbau is high society glam personified. She is crisp, fancy and glistens in white and gold. Love it!

Instagram
Instagram

The element of surprise went amiss with Denise’s choice of barely there clothing. We are so over the unnecessary skin exposure – it’s a total yawn.

Instagram
Instagram

Florence Mokgatsi (middle) is a bit too simple for our taste. Sad to say but her look is forgettable.

Winner: Khanyi Mbau

Instagram
Instagram

Ms. Mbau stuns in her gear – she is the snow queen.

Thigh game strong: Pearl Thusi, Bonang Matheba, K Naomi

Instagram
Instagram

Pearl Thusi is a goddess in a glitzy white dress. Her fabulous physique and flawless legs steal the show in this winning number.

Instagram
Instagram

K Naomi takes a risk and comes out on top in her sheer gown. Everything, from her dress to her hair and make-up, is on point. This deserves a round of applause!

Winner: Bonang Matheba

Instagram
Instagram

This lady is the envy of every woman’s eye in a striking gown. Bonang is the highlight of the Durban July. PS: her legs give us serious motivation to hit the gym.

Jump starters: Amanda du-Pont and Dineo Moeketsi

Instagram
Instagram

Dineo Moeketsi has us guessing in a jumpsuit and dress combo that leaves us more confused than amazed.

Winner: Amanda du-Pont

Instagram
Instagram

Amanda takes the cup in her embellished one piece. The intricate grapevine detail matched with the grey locks and statement heels make our hearts flutter with joy.

Better luck next year: Basestana Kumalo, Lerato Kganyago and Thembi Seete

Instagram
Instagram

Thembi looks like she’s about to get swallowed by all those folds. Her space suit-inspired gown is not working for us.

Instagram
Instagram

Lerato Kganyago reminds us of a model at a bridal shoot. We prefer her more adventurous side as this is too safe.

Instagram
Instagram

Basestana Kumalo is overdone and it comes off a slightly tacky. When in doubt, keep it simple ladies.

And now for the gents: Cyprian Ndlovu, Vuyo Dabula , Stoane Seete and Somizi Mhlongo

Instagram
Instagram

Somizi knows how to work a suit. He brings fabulosity to the fore and slays in this one.

Instagram
Instagram

Vuyo Dabula executes a dapper style. He is the definition of a well groomed gentleman.

Instagram
Instagram

Cyrian could’ve pushed the envelope a bit more. We can’t fault the look but there isn’t anything about it that stands out for us.

Instagram
Instagram

Stoane Seete takes the plunge and rocks teal. The colour looks great on him and we love a double breasted jacket but he should have chosen a different shoe.

Winner: This is a tie as both Somizi and Vuyo sit on the throne as kings of style.
