Why plucking nostril hair is not recommended

Having nostril hair is an occurrence that is almost impossible to avoid and often affects both males and females. While some people are okay with the idea of having hair within their nostrils, others are completely conscious about it and often avail themselves of multiple methods to having them removed.

At the centre of these solutions are usually techniques that involve plucking or waxing. While the mission of having those tiny hair follicles may have been accomplished, this is often a dangerous thing to do, explains the health and wellness information hub Healthline.

While many may choose to remove their nostril hair due to personal reasons, Healthline explains that one’s nostril hair plays an important part in your body’s defence system.

“It helps keep dust, allergens, and other small particles from entering your lungs.”

In contrast, removing too much hair may make you more sensitive to these kinds of debris.

“Plucking your hair can also lead to irritation, infections, and ingrown hairs,” explains the above-mentioned source.

According to the reputable information hub, Medical News Today, three of the most dangerous ways of having one’s nostril hair removed is when it involves techniques like:

Using hair removal cream – May burn delicate skin inside of the nose and produce fumes that could be dangerous if inhaled.

Waxing or plucking – Leads to ingrown hair and infections.

Using pointed scissors – Could puncture delicate mucous membranes inside of the nose.

As a safer alternative, many publications recommended trimming instead. This ensures that your hair follicles are not entirely removed from the root, which still provides your nose with somewhat of a protective barrier from dust or bacteria trying to enter the airways.

Meanwhile, Medical News Today has provided the following safe steps on how you can shorten those unnecessary long hairs when using a trimmer.

They are:

  • Blowing the nose before trimming to get rid of any mucus around the hairs.
  • Using a magnifying mirror to see the hairs in more detail.
  • Leaning the head back when trimming to increase visibility inside the nostrils.
  • Placing the trimmers close to the skin when trimming.
  • Putting only the most visible hairs and leaving the rest intact.
  • Blowing the nose again afterwards to remove any loose hairs.
