Top 5 make-up products for beginners

by Ncumisa Lerato Kunana

While you may be tempted to stock up on the latest beauty crazes, any seasoned pro will tell you that the path to makeup mastery begins with a solid understanding of the basics and understanding what each product can do for you. We’ve compiled a list with the help of make-up artist, Caitlyn Martyn of the absolute makeup must-haves for beginners.

1. Primer

Primers are often overlooked, especially by makeup newcomers, but they are essential components of any makeup kit. Consider it photoshop for your skin. It evens out your skin tone by filling in large pores, lines, and other blemishes, leaving you with a flawless and even base for easy makeup application.

2. Foundation

There are two absolute musts when it comes to foundation: finding the right shade for your skin tone and avoiding the dreaded “cakey” look. You may need to try out different products before finding the right color for your skin tone, so research is essential. Fortunately, many brands now carry a wide range of shades that complement every skin tone.

3. Concealer

This is a versatile product that can be used to conceal discoloration, fine lines, age spots, and other blemishes around your eyes, as well as a base for eyeshadow or lipstick, and even as a contouring product.

4. Neutral eyeshadow palette

A neutral eyeshadow palette that can transition your look from day to night is essential in any makeup kit. Taupes, bronzes, browns, and cream-colored shadows are not only flattering on all eye colors and skin tones, but they also work well for creating natural, barely-there daytime looks and glam nighttime makeup.

5. Mascara

Many beauty experts believe that mascara is the most important component of makeup. Mascara adds thickness, length, and volume to your lashes, instantly opening and framing your eyes. The best part? It requires very little effort. It’s the quickest way to have a put-together look on a daily basis.
