The evolution of eyebrow shaping over the years

Whether we are aware of it or not, eyebrows are one of those facial elements that influence how we view ourselves and other people.

However, despite its significance, eyebrow looks have changed so dramatically over time that what was seen as the “perfect” brow in one period is frequently mocked in another.

If you’ve ever stopped to think about the shape of your brows while gazing at a pair of tweezers, this mini-history lesson is just for you.

Over the years, eyebrows have changed from being bold and thick to being barely noticeable and back again. We have noticed this with fashion, some items make it to the next decade and some just sadly don’t survive with picky generations who know each have their own checklist of what should work or not.

According to Kyolan Professional Makeup, “Each decade has its own typical eyebrow style. Every make-up enthusiast can tell just by looking at the brows in which decade the photo was taken. While women in the 1920s had very thin, long, and downward-shaped eyebrows, the trend went back to the natural look for ladies already in the 1940s.”

Short bobs with thin, defined eyebrows and flapper dresses were popular in the 1920s. The brows were darker, rounder, and thinner in the 1930s, and the distance between the brow and the eye widened. In the 1940s, eyebrows were thicker, rounder, and more natural-looking.

A darker, more defined style with a distinct, thick, high-angled arch was popular in the 1950s. Whereas the 1970s had thin, excessively plucked eyebrows, and the 1960s had bigger, thinner brows, the experts mentioned above state.

The professional makeup website also adds that while the 1990s and 2000s thought that precise, plucked, and thin brows, the 1980s saw natural, fluffy brows, the 2010s, however, witnessed bigger, high-pointed arches, individually painted hairs, and brows that were defined, overfilled, and carved out.

Here are two brow styles we’ll be seeing more of in 2025.

Sunkissed Brows: “The latest neurotoxin aesthetic to become buzzy in beauty. The procedure involves injecting a neuromodulator in a certain area of the face to raise the brows and the outer corners of the eyes, giving you a fox-like lifted look,” according to New Beauty.

Fox Brows: This look incorporates a new softness trend and completes the circle of brow minimalism. As the name implies, the trend frames the face and adds a hint of warmth with lighter brows, the beauty-oriented source explains.
