The 5 things you should never do if you want healthy nails

Glossy, strong nails aren’t just about polish – nail health depends on everyday habits. While a nourishing routine can keep your nails looking their best, certain mistakes can undo your hard work and leave them weak, brittle, or prone to breakage.

Here are the five nail habits you should always avoid if you want healthy, beautiful nails.

Skipping a base coat

It may feel like an unnecessary step, but applying polish without a base coat can stain the nail plate and cause long-term discolouration. A base coat also acts as a protective layer, helping polish last longer and keeping nails smooth and strong.

Picking at gels and cuticles

Peeling gel polish or tugging at cuticles doesn’t just look untidy – it weakens the nail surface and leaves the surrounding skin vulnerable to infection. Cuticles are there to protect the nail bed, so treat them gently and resist the urge to pick.

Over-filing nails

Filing too aggressively or using a heavy buffer can thin the nail and make it bendy or weak. Instead, file in one direction with a gentle hand and keep buffing to a minimum. The goal is to shape and smooth, not strip away layers of the nail.

Attempting diy gel manicures

At-home gel kits may be tempting, but they can cause damage if used incorrectly. Without the right knowledge and tools, nails can become brittle or develop allergic reactions. When it comes to gels, it’s best to leave the process to trained professionals.

Ignoring signs of damage

Peeling, splitting, ridges, or sudden discolouration are all signs that your nails need care – or could even point to underlying health issues. Don’t ignore changes. Trim nails short if they keep snagging, and use nourishing treatments like cuticle oil or hand cream to restore strength.

Healthy nails are built on small, consistent habits. Avoid these five mistakes and focus on gentle care, protection, and hydration. With a little attention, your nails can grow stronger, look glossier, and feel healthier – without the need for constant polish.
