Style tips that highlight your body shape with confidence

by Akhona Ndlela

Style should always feel like a celebration of the kind of personality that you have not a set of rules you’re trying to follow.

Understanding your body shape, dressing intentionally, and selecting items that make you feel like the most confident version of yourself are the keys to the best looks, not following trends or worrying about your size.

Whether you’re curvy, petite, athletic, or somewhere in between, there are ways to highlight what you love and feel good in your own skin — without hiding or overcompensating.

According to WellnessEd, “The body comes in huge variety of different sizes, proportions, and body compositions. While size is about how much mass a person has and body composition about what makes up that mass (fat, muscle, skeletal structure), body shape describes how muscle and fat is distributed and how the skeleton is moulded.”

The source mentioned above states that you can measure your shoulders, bust, waist, and hips with a measuring tape to determine your body shape. Make sure the tape is snug but not too tight as you wrap it around your hips, waist, shoulders, and bust. Accuracy is important when taking shoulder measurements, so if at all possible, have a friend assist.

The health-focused publication Healthline claims that body types can differ from one another and are not always precise. Rectangle, triangle, spoon, hourglass, top hourglass, bottom hourglass, inverted triangle, round or oval, diamond, and athletic are a few popular body shapes.

Rectangular body shapes are frequently worn with tube dresses, belted waists, and off-the-shoulder tops because of their comparable waist sizes. Whereas spoon body shapes have bigger hips and a defined waist, triangle body types have smaller shoulders and busts. Diamond body types have a larger waist and wider hips, whereas hourglass body types have proportionate upper and lower bodies, the above health hub further explains.
