Night-time skin care mistakes to avoid

by Unathi Balele

A night-time skincare routine is not strictly necessary, but it is highly recommended if you want to maintain healthy and youthful-looking skin.

According to Healthline, during the day, your skin is exposed to environmental stressors such as UV radiation, pollution, and free radicals, which can cause damage to the skin cells. At night, while you sleep, your skin repairs and regenerates itself.

By incorporating a night-time skincare routine, you can help support your skin’s natural repair process and keep your skin looking its best.

However, it’s important to avoid certain mistakes that can harm your skin or hinder its rejuvenation process. Here are some common night-time skincare mistakes to avoid by Everyday Health:

  1. Sleeping with makeup on: This is one of the most common mistakes that people make, and it can cause clogged pores, breakouts, and premature aging. Make sure to remove all makeup before going to bed.
  2. Skipping cleansing: Even if you don’t wear makeup, it’s important to cleanse your skin thoroughly before bed to remove dirt, oil, and impurities that have accumulated on your skin throughout the day.
  3. Over-exfoliating: Exfoliating too often or using harsh exfoliants can strip your skin of its natural oils and cause irritation. Limit exfoliation to 1-2 times per week and choose a gentle exfoliant that suits your skin type.
  4. Skipping moisturizer: Moisturizing at night is essential for maintaining healthy, hydrated skin. Choose a moisturizer that is suitable for your skin type and apply it generously before bed.
  5. Using the wrong products: It’s important to use skincare products that are suitable for your skin type and address your specific concerns. Using the wrong products can cause irritation, dryness, or breakouts.
