Forever Fabulous: Margaret Gardiner Shares Her Timeless Beauty and Fashion Secrets

by Zaghrah Anthony

At 66, Margaret Gardiner, South Africa’s former Miss Universe and international style icon continues to turn heads. With decades of experience spanning pageantry, Hollywood red carpets, and fashion editorial work, she’s become a trusted authority on beauty, style, and grace.

After celebrating her birthday in August, Gardiner appeared as radiant as ever. We sat down with her to uncover the secrets behind her youthful glow, effortless style, and confident presence.

Sunscreen First: The Non-Negotiable

Gardiner’s top beauty tip is simple, yet essential: sunscreen. She shared with Independent Media Lifestyle that protecting your skin isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s a matter of health.

“I’m terrified of getting more facial cancer. SA women in particular should start young. Wear a hat. Wear a scarf. You can ditch it when you arrive, but in the car, while walking protect your skin,” she advised.

Her message resonates widely on social media, where followers often comment on the importance of sun protection in South Africa’s harsh UV climate. Gardiner emphasizes that prevention is key, and early care makes all the difference in maintaining healthy, youthful skin.

Beauty Beyond Skin Deep

For Gardiner, beauty isn’t just about appearances, it’s rooted in kindness. She appreciates the evolving definition of beauty in today’s world, noting that inclusivity and diversity have reshaped the industry.

“It’s more inclusive and I love that,” she said, highlighting how beauty now embraces all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds. Fans online have lauded her perspective, praising her for championing character and compassion alongside style.

Fashion with Comfort and Personality

As a fashion editor for the Golden Globes and a seasoned red carpet observer, Gardiner has mastered the art of mixing timeless elegance with personal flair.

“Incorporate fashion but stay with style. I always have a few fun pieces, but my basic style has remained the same. I replace the pieces I purchased when I was in my 20s because that’s my style. Always feel comfortable,” she shared.

Her Instagram series, “Travel Wardrobe,” showcases how she adapts her wardrobe on the go, proving that fashion can be practical, chic, and uniquely individual. “Don’t let anyone tell you how you should dress, look, or be. The most fashionable people create their own style. Be you,” Gardiner encouraged.

Grooming and the Power of Details

Gardiner also revealed that meticulous grooming is a cornerstone of looking polished.

“I think grooming falls under tidy, good fit, and clean. It’s in the details, so the total look is pulled together. There are things one can do, finishes and accessories that complete a look and take it to the next level,” she explained.

Her followers on X and Instagram often praise her practical approach, noting how her tips are achievable and grounded in real-life style, rather than unattainable perfection.

The Timeless Lesson

Margaret Gardiner’s advice is simple yet powerful: protect your skin, dress for yourself, and let kindness define your beauty. Across decades of public life, she has proven that elegance isn’t about age, it’s about confidence, authenticity, and thoughtful self-care.

As South Africans continue to celebrate her achievements, Gardiner remains a guiding light for anyone seeking timeless style, healthy habits, and a philosophy that blends inner and outer beauty.
