Importance of relieving hair from braiding

by Silindokuhle Booi

Braiding hair is very convenient as it helps with hair growth, however, you should also take time to let your hair lose. Braids also cause traction called alopecia (hair loss) which happens when constantly pulled.

Hair damage

According to American Academy of Dermatology braids put tension on the hair, this can cause hair to weaken and break. It is important to remove braids timely so that there are no further damages.

Scalp irritation and inflammation

Braids can cause irritation and inflammation on the scalp; this is usually because the braids are too tight or their use of hair chemicals. Scalp irritation is usually shown by redness, flaking and itchiness says Natural Curly and Curly Nikki.

Dry and brittle

This happens when the natural oils from the scalp are unable to reach the ends of the hair causing it to be dry and prone. This is especially common to people who have curly or oily hair, says the American Academy of Dermatology.

Maintenance

Doing braids require more maintenance than normal hair. Natural Curly and Curly Nikki adds that this includes washing hair with shampoo to help with avoiding tight ponytails which put tension on the hair.

It is essential to be aware of the risks that braids can cause when you have them for a long time by following the right maintenance and care guidelines. It is also important to pay attention to any signs of damages, if any found you may need to go and get professional help.
