How to wear colour this season

by Akhona Ndlela

Colour is a powerful tool for self-expression, confidence, and building a wardrobe that feels genuinely unique.

So, forget about the trends this winter season and embrace colours that reflect your personality, way of life, and mood.

Dark coats, overcast skies, thick layers, as well as neutral or overly functional outfits are common winter wardrobe staples.

Some individuals avoid colour in winter, believing it’s too striking, difficult to style, or doesn’t match the colder months’ moods.

Brighter hues may seem more appropriate for spring, and many may believe that colour may not go well with your traditional coats, knits, and boots.

However, winter is actually the ideal time of year to wear colour because it adds personality, warmth, and lightness to an otherwise subdued wardrobe.

What to do

Start by selecting colours that enhance your natural energy and complement your skin tone, rather than simply going for what’s currently popular on socials.

Warm neutrals, jewel colours, and rich earth tones are always effective because they are classic, adaptable, and simple to combine in any season.

Do you like your colours bold? Try wearing a bold coat, a colourful blouse, or bright trousers that are paired with muted accessories.

If bold colours seem overwhelming, try dusty pinks, gentle greens, or deep blues. Subtle colours can still be expressive.

The easiest way to add colour is with accessories; consider brightening your everyday outfits with bright shoes, scarves, or bags.

Without depending on seasonal changes, monochrome dressing—using various shades of the same colour—feels effortless, modern, and always stylish.

Intentionally layer colours to add depth and balance to your ensemble composition rather than chaos or clash.

Consider the feelings that colours evoke in you: calm, energised, empowered, and elegant. More than ever, let that determine your style this season.
