Dandruff is a common condition that causes the skin on the scalp to flake. Dandruff is not contagious or serious. But it can be embarrassing and difficult to treat.

Mild dandruff can be treated with a gentle daily shampoo. If that doesn’t work, a medicated shampoo may help. Symptoms may return later.

According to the Mayo Clinic, dandruff is a mild form of seborrheic dermatitis.

Dandruff signs and symptoms may include:

  • Skin flakes on your scalp, hair, eyebrows, beard or mustache, and shoulders
  • Itchy scalp
  • Scaly, crusty scalp in infants with cradle cap

The signs and symptoms may be more severe if you’re stressed, and they tend to flare in cold, dry seasons.

Mayo Clinic states that dandruff may be caused by the following:

  • Irritated, oily skin
  • Dry skin
  • A yeast like fungus (malassezia) that feeds on oils on the scalps of most adults
  • Sensitivity to hair care products (contact dermatitis)
  • Other skin conditions, such as psoriasis and eczema

However the issue of dandruff can be solved alone at home using home remedies such as the following:

Aloe vera

This succulent plant species of the genus Aloe is often added to skin ointments, cosmetics, and lotions. It has loads of health benefits.

According to Healthline Aloe vera  has antibacterial and antifungal properties that may reduce inflammation and decrease dandruff symptoms.

Aspirin

Aspirin contains salicylic acid, an ingredient found in many anti-dandruff shampoos. This acid has been shown to be effective in the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff as it works by helping to get rid of scaly skin and loosening flakes so they can be removed.

Coconut oil

According to some research, coconut oil may be as effective as mineral oil in improving skin hydration when applied as a moisturizer.

It may work by improving skin hydration and preventing dryness, which can worsen dandruff.

Tea tree oil

According to research the tea tree oil is effective at fighting the specific strain of fungus that can cause both seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff.

It has also been known to treat ailments such as acne and psoriasis.

Omega-3s

Omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in your body and therefore plays a crucial part in the function of your heart, immune system, and lungs.

According to Healthline Omega-3 fatty acids are important to skin health and may help reduce inflammation. Deficiency can cause dry skin, dry hair, and dandruff.

If the condition does not change or worsen see your primary care doctor or a doctor who specializes in skin conditions (dermatologist) if your condition doesn’t improve with regular use of dandruff shampoo or any of the home home remedies mentioned above.
