It feels like we’re already well into autumn, and this season is quickly proving to be a chilly one. We feel the drop in the temperature, but it can still change at the drop of a hat. One minute we’re freezing and the next, we’re frantically fanning the heat away. But how does one dress for weather that constantly changes its mind? The answer is layering!

Layering is a must, and the best way to make your wardrobe layer-ready is to keep all the essentials. Elevate your wardrobe this season and include these layering essentials to stay warm and look stylish.

Learn to layer in 3 easy steps:

1. Build from your thinnest layer up

Starting with lightweight pieces is crucial to creating a perfectly layered look.

You can still throw on your favourite dress, but layer a thin turtle neck underneath it, and a chic cropped jacket or coat over for colder moments.

Turtle necks – they come in varying levels of thickness and will be a wardrobe essential this season! The idea is to start with your lightweight basics, like a long-sleeve turtleneck tee, that you can easily layer on top of. We all know the uncomfortable feeling of layering and then feeling too restricted, so keep your bottom layers thin.

Also, long sleeve dresses will be a huge trend this season so ensure you have a few in your wardrobe! It’s a great foundation to start on any layered look.

Style tip: ‘Winterize’ your dresses – make use of your summer wardrobe in this step!

Start with working with a pallet of 3.

Layer 1 is your base layer. It’s the thinnest layer, so if you need to remove a top layer, you are still fully dressed underneath.

Layer 2 is your functional layer, and it’s usually a knit. This is the layer that will keep you warm.

Layer 3 is your accent layer, which can be a coat or trench. This really gives your outfit a stylish flare.

2. Play around with lengths

Finding the right balance of proportions can elongate your body or accentuate your shape. Not only does this technique create shape by drawing attention to your waist, but it will also help to create the illusion that you’re taller.

Style tip: Layering your dress with a cropped blazer or cardigan is ideal.

3. Elevate with accessories

Elevate your look with accessories. Some layering accessories include:

  • Stockings.
  • Scarves.
  • Necklaces.

Style tip: Oversized scarves are a stylish way to have fun with layering this season. Whether you opt for colour or print, tying a scarf around your neck or layering one over your shoulders is a beautiful way to transform your look.

Layering essentials to have in your wardrobe this autumn

  • Cami’s, t-shirts (short and long sleeve).
  • Turtlenecks.
  • Skirts.
  • Cardigans.
  • Leather and denim jackets.
  • Coats.
  • Scarves.
  • Stocking and socks.
  • Necklaces.

Play around with the colour, texture and prints, and have fun with layering!
