How often should you relax your hair?

by Unathi Balele

Relaxing hair has been a popular practice for many individuals seeking to achieve straight, manageable locks. However, it’s crucial to strike a balance between achieving the desired look and maintaining the health of your hair.

Let’s delve into the topic of how often one should relax their hair, exploring the factors to consider and providing guidelines for maintaining beautiful, relaxed hair while minimising potential damage:

Understanding Hair Relaxers:

Hair relaxers are chemical treatments used to alter the natural texture of the hair, making it straighter and more manageable. The process involves applying a relaxer cream or lotion to the hair, which chemically breaks down the protein structure of the hair strands, resulting in a permanent change until new growth occurs.

Factors to Consider:

When determining how often to relax your hair, several factors should be taken into account:
1. Hair Type: The natural texture and strength of your hair play a significant role. Generally, coarser and more resistant hair types can withstand relaxers better than finer, delicate hair. Understanding your hair type will help determine the appropriate frequency of relaxer application.
2. Hair Health: Prioritizing the health of your hair is paramount. If your hair is damaged, weak, or prone to breakage, frequent relaxer applications can exacerbate these issues. It is crucial to give your hair adequate time to recover between treatments.
3. New Growth: As your hair grows, new, untreated hair will appear at the roots. The line of demarcation, where relaxed hair meets new growth, is a crucial point to consider. Relaxing too often can cause overlapping of relaxer applications and lead to excessive damage.
