Here’s why workout make-up is a no-go

You always want to look cute while breaking a sweat but wearing makeup at the gym is a definite no.

Wearing makeup while working out is not a good idea. In some reality TV shows, we see women wearing makeup while exercising. When you sweat, your pores open up, so it’s best to skip the makeup and apply it after your gym session.

According to a study by Dongsun Park, PhD from the Korea National University of Education, wearing makeup during workouts can disrupt the skin’s ability to maintain proper oil levels, potentially leading to dry skin, clogged pores, and acne.

“For skin health, it’s best to exercise with your makeup removed,” adds Dr Dongsun.

Beauty Blender advises that for outdoor exercise it is important that you wash your face with an oil-free towel, put on clean training clothes, and apply SPF 30 or higher sunscreen. To avoid pore clogging, use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen that is devoid of oils.

NYC-based dermatologist Maria Garshick mentioned that wearing makeup during a workout can cause it to trap your sweat and oil. She adds, “This can contribute to clogged pores, worsening breakouts, skin irritation, and redness.”

It is important to note that incorrect oil levels can lead to acne outbreaks, inconsistent makeup application, and uneven skin texture during workouts, according to a study by Everyday Health.

The study also discovered that powdered makeup may interfere with normal skin function during workouts since some oil is required for hydration, antioxidant transfer, and bacterial defense. While powder does not block pores as much as a cream foundation, it can dry up oils and has similar effects on the skin after a workout. Eye makeup such as mascara and eyeliner can also cause skin irritation, itching, rashes, and infection.
