As December was a month of relaxation, many sought to give themselves a break from putting tonnes of hours into their hair by getting it braided. This might not be a time of relaxation for the braider, though. However, this was no concern for a woman based in Polokwane who shared with social media that she made a whopping R7100 in one week for the month of December.

Calling herself @materialgworl61 on TikTok, the 21-year-old woman shared a video montage of an array of the protective styles she offered her clients as well as the prices she charged which ranged between R450 and R850.

“My busiest week ever,” she wrote in her caption.

Receiving close to 600,000 views on the app, TikTokers took the woman’s comment section to both praise her and question the pricing.

One TikToker commented, “I wish I could do this for a living mara [but] I’m too slow, people would get upset.” Responding with words of encouragement, @materialgworl61 said, “Girl, I used to take 10 hours and now I’m down to 6 hours for small braids. Keep practising!”

A Durban-based TikToker confessed, “Seeing how much braids cost in other cities makes me not want to leave Durban.”

While another person said, “Pricing is not make sure. Some got the same hairstyles but their prices are not the same.” Seeing the comment, the woman replied, “Prices are set based on the size of the blocks/braid, not the type of hairstyle, please.”
