Are hair relaxers good for you?

Putting chemicals in your hair isn’t the best decision as they have long-term effects resulting to hair loss and a bad skin reaction.

For some, monthly hair relaxer appointments are a norm but as you get older and learn how to maintain your natural hair you understand that relaxing your hair regularly does a lot of damage.

According to beauty hub, Hair Club, by relaxing your hair you are making it move thin and prone to breakage, adding that, it also causes skin burn and scalp damage amongst other things.

“According to a study from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), relaxers are used by more than two-thirds of Black women to straighten their hair for easy styling and increased length,” says L’Oreal Paris.

According to NBC News, significant studies have highlighted the connection between chemical hair relaxers and higher rates of uterine cancer. In response, Shontel Brown and Ayanna Pressley have instructed the Food and Drug Administration to outlaw hair relaxer products that contain formaldehyde.

The above-mentioned source adds that you should not use these products more frequently than usual because of these effects.

L’Oreal Paris suggests knowing your hair type given the various types of hair relaxers available. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends caution and professional counsel for safe application. The beauty hub urges DIY users using home kits to follow all directions.

A quick tip if you plan to relax your hair try and apply Vaseline around your line before applying the product as it will protect your hairline from damage. It is also important to remember to apply the product from the roots for better results and if it burns do not keep it for too long as it will hurt your scalp.
