All you need to know about skincare layering

A skincare routine is as important as brushing your teeth in the morning, even though some people don’t have routines for their skin. One should always understand the significance behind skincare layering.

When you think of skincare layering compare it to how you apply your makeup. Imagine yourself starting to prep your face and then adding the necessary makeup products step-by-step. Now skincare layering is a lot similar to that.

According to beauty hub, Healthline, your skincare routine should always consist of a cleanser, toner and exfoliator as this allows the products to absorb into your skin smoothly.

Keep in mind that your morning and night routine will not always contain the same ingredients and products, as creams like SPF are best worn in the morning to protect your skin from sun exposure.

Here’s what you need to know about skincare layering:

Morning

Healthline has this to say about your morning skincare layering process

  • Cleanser: The beauty hub emphasises starting your mornings with a cleanser that will help remove buildup in your skin whilst you are sleeping, as our pillowcase carries a lot of bacteria that later absorb into your skin.
  • Moisturiser: Anything that can be used to hydrate your skin works perfectly as being ashy in 2024 is not the way to go.
  • Sunscreen: UV rays are very dangerous to the skin as sun damage can cause skin cancer meaning that sunscreen has to be part of your morning routine.

The above-mentioned beauty hub mentions that the steps mentioned above are for a basic skincare routine, adding that, you can also add toners and serums as part of the layering process but always make sure you use them according to your skin type.

Night

Herbal Dynamic Beauty says this about nighttime skin layering:

  •  Makeup Removal: If you wear makeup during the day use good micellar water to remove it, as according to the above-mentioned beauty hub leads to wrinkles under the eyes.
  • Cleanser: At night you need a cleanser that only removes the dirt from the day but is something that can absorb into your skin leaving you with youthful and glowing skin.
  • Toner: This beauty recommends using the skin toner you use in the morning as it balances your skin pH levels for the skincare products you will use next.
  • Treatments: This step is used only if there are things you want to target like spots or acne. It is also the perfect time for using masks.
