A maintenance guide for curly hair

As we enter into the modern era, we begin discovering that more and more people are beginning to embrace walking around with Afros or frizzy-looking hair.

While there are several treatments like relaxers or even flat iron straighteners continue to exist, many have opted to embrace their natural hair type and rocking their curls.

Furthermore, despite not using several chemical-based products that could be harmful to your hair, it is still essential that you continue to take proper care of it by doing regular maintenance to keep it looking strong and healthy.

Below are a few ways that you can maintain your natural curly hair:

Wash when necessary

The American Academy of Dermatology notes that it is important not to wash your curly hair frequently. The effects will leave your hair dry, thick and frizzy. Instead, opt to try and wash it at least every two to three weeks.

“Choose a moisturizing shampoo that is formulated for curly hair. If you typically style your hair with gels, oils, creams, or pomades, consider using a clarifying shampoo before the moisturizing shampoo,” says the above-mentioned source.

Take care of your scalp

The overproduction of oil on your scalp might cause your hair to produce dandruff. To overcome this. One method that you can use, is to apply anti-dandruff shampoo on your scalp only leave it on for at least 10 minutes before rinsing it off. Thereafter apply a moisturizing shampoo to the rest of your body.

Never brush your hair

Skincraft – a beauty publication specializing in hair and skincare – notes that it is important not to brush your hair. Instead, it is recommended that you use a wide-toothed comb before shampooing, after washing you can simply run your fingers through your hair.

“Never ever brush your wet hair as it is more prone to breakage and damage,” explains the source.

Make cold water your best friend

Skin Craft explains that warm water is known for stripping your scalp from its natural oils. It can also open up cuticles making your hair frizzy and prone to breaking, this is why it is better to opt for cold water instead.

Keep trimming

It is important that you keep trimming your split ends and damaged hair every 6 to 8 weeks to have your hair looking healthy.
