It is summer, and if you are in a city like Cape Town, you have been feeling the heat the last couple of weeks.

Too much exposure to the sun is not suitable for our bodies, as too much UV radiation has the potential to harm our skin, hair and eyes.

While still enjoying hot summer days that sometimes make us unable to sleep at night from their warmth, there are essentials that you ought to have in your bag to protect yourself from the harm that may be caused by the sun. Here are 5 summer items that should be in your bag.

  • Sunglasses -might be used as a fashion trend by some people, but they are a necessity on scorching hot summer days. A good pair of sunglasses will protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful UV rays, adds TheTalko, the modern-day woman’s guide to life.
  • Sunscreen – Sunscreen is a must-have on summer days; in fact, many dermatologists suggest using it throughout all year’s seasons.
  • Bucket hat – Why expose your face on a summer day when you can cover it with a bucket hat? Bucket hats are easily foldable and take little space in your bag, adding the above information.
  • A refreshing facial spray – On a hot summer day, it is a perfect refresher as it has a cooling effect. One in your handbag will cool you down while hydrating your skin whenever the heat overwhelms you. According to Woman of Style and Substance, an information source that supplies much-needed information on women-related matters, it is essential to use alcohol-free facial sprays with soothing ingredients.
  • A bright-coloured lipstick or lip gloss – A bright lip colour brightens our faces and, therefore, brightens our day. “If you want your lips to stand out, pair your pop of colour with some definition by lining them first with a lip pencil in a similar shade,” shares the hub mentioned above.
