Yolanda Pani: From skeptic to sensation

by Silindokuhle Booi

In an exclusive interview with BONA Magazine, TikToker Yolanda Pani opens up about her journey from being hesitant about joining the platform to becoming a rising star in the music industry.

“I never thought I’d join the TikTok community,” Yolanda admits. “I was hesitant and skeptical at first, like many of us when faced with something new.”

However, with the encouragement of her former partner, she took the leap and started creating content. “Fast forward to today, and I’m grateful for that push,” she says.

Yolanda’s audience has been incredibly supportive, not just of her initial content, but also of her recent transition into singing. “The response to my music has been overwhelming,” she gushes. “My fans have been urging me to release more songs, and their enthusiasm means the world to me.”

When asked about her musical influences, Yolanda cites Simphiwe Dana and Thandiswa Mazwai as her biggest inspiration. “Growing up, I idolised these musical geniuses, and their work continues to inspire me,” she says.

The musician believes that staying true to one’s roots is essential in the music industry, where Western culture often dominates. “Singing in my native language is non-negotiable for me,” she emphasises. “It’s a vital part of my artistic expression and authenticity.”

Her songwriting process is deeply intuitive and organic. “I don’t necessarily draw inspiration from specific experiences or observations,” she explains. “Instead, I listen to my heart and allow my emotions to guide me.”

A great example of this process is her song Ukukhanya, which was born out of gratitude. “The words flowed effortlessly, and the song was born,” she recalls.

As she ventured into a singing career, she faced her biggest challenge: putting herself out there, vulnerable to criticism. “The fear of being judged and criticised held me back for a while,” she admits. However, she’s learned to accept that not everyone will appreciate her art.

“Instead of letting fear hold me back, I’m choosing to focus on my passion and the people who resonate with my music,” she says.

Yolanda is excited to share her goals for her music career. “Before the end of this year, I plan to release another single, which will further establish my presence in the music industry,” she reveals.

Yolanda also envisions herself taking her music to global stages, performing at theatre shows and live concerts. “My aspiration is to share my music with diverse audiences worldwide, spreading love, joy, and unity,” she says.

TikTok has been a game-changer for Yolanda, helping her connect with a new and diverse audience.

“The platform has been extremely helpful in promoting my music,” she says. Her song accumulated an impressive 1 million views on TikTok in under 2 days of its release, with the buzz spilling over to YouTube.

Wrapping up the interview, Yolanda gives words of encouragement to all the aspiring singers and TikTokers out there, “Don’t hold yourself back!” She encourages them to believe in themselves, their talents, and their worth.

“Your authenticity is what will set you apart,” she says. “Focus on your journey, and don’t let the noise distract you from your purpose. You’ve got this! Trust yourself, stay committed, and keep pushing forward.”
