How many times have you appreciated your voice, whether it’s your singing or speaking voice? Well, World Voice Day is celebrated annually on April 16.
This day is dedicated to recognising the boundless limits of the human voice. According to National Day Calendar, head and neck surgeons as well as other health professionals encourage the youth and elderly to assess their vocal health and take action to maintain good voice habits.

Frequently, something as familiar as our voice becomes easily overlooked. World Voice Day reminds us to protect this vital tool we rely upon daily, so it remains with us throughout our lives. This is the one day you don’t have to feel awkward about singing aloud in public.
South Africa has been producing some of the most powerful voices in opera. These are voices which shake the rafters, and are worth your time and ears. Let’s appreciate some of these South African opera singers:
Pretty Yende
Hailing from the small town of Piet Retief, she is a world-renowned coloratura soprano who has risen to the top of the opera world with unparalleled speed. Pretty has performed leading roles at top houses, including Teatro alla Scala and the Met Opera.
Innocent Masuku
Innocent is a tenor based in London. He gained international fame as a finalist on Britain’s Got Talent in 2024, previously performing as an ENO Harewood Artist. Innocent won many hearts on the show with his emotive voice, leading to the judges hailing him as one of the greatest opera singers in the show’s history.
Sibongile Khumalo
Sibongile was a South African singer and songwriter before she passed away in January 2021. She was known as South Africa’s “First Lady of Song,” and was a celebrated singer who excelled in opera, jazz, and traditional music, performing internationally. Having left a legacy, many music lovers continue to enjoy her voice today.

Asisipho Petu
Asisipho is a promising mezzo-soprano from the Eastern Cape who has performed with the Cape Town Opera.
Luvo Maranti
Luvo is a tenor recognised for his powerful voice, making strides in the local and international opera scene. He was born in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape to a family of musos. He was surrounded by music and singing throughout his early life. His interest in opera, in particular, was sparked when he was just eight years old.
