World Poetry Day: 5 Poets worth knowing in South Africa

World Poetry Day is celebrated annually on March 21, with poets worldwide using imaginative, rhythmic and often compressed language to evoke emotions, share stories, or express ideas to capture the focus of an audience.

One of the key themes and focus for 2026 is bridging divides and the power of expression, focusing on fostering global harmony.

As we celebrate World Poetry Day, here are five South African poets to know:

Dr Gcina Mhlophe

Dr Gcina Mhlophe is known for her poems and storytelling in multiple languages. Hailing from KwaZulu-Natal, she is an anti-apartheid activist, renowned storyteller, author, and poet. She is undoubtedly a national icon. Known as ‘Nozincwadi’ (Mother of Books), her work spans poetry, children’s books, and performances, keeping oral tradition alive with a powerful, commanding voice.

Antjie Krog

A prolific poet, academic, and journalist, Antjie is regarded as one of South Africa’s most important contemporary voices, particularly in Afrikaans literature. Her work often addresses themes of identity, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and personal reflection.

Lebo Mashile

A household name in South Africa, Lebo Mashile is a prominent poet, actress, and producer. Her work is known for being lyrical and gutsy, dealing with issues of identity, gender, and the complexities of life in modern South Africa. She is a prominent figure in the spoken-word scene.

Siphokazi Jonas

A multi-award-winning poet, playwright, and performer, Siphokazi Jonas is a prominent contemporary voice whose work explores themes of identity, womanhood, resilience, and memory. Her work often features in theatrical productions and has earned accolades at the Poetry Africa festival.

Xabiso Vili

Xabiso Vili is an award-winning spoken word artist, performer, and writer. His work is known for being socially engaged and innovative, often navigating the intersection of technology, poetry and personal experience.
