Miss Universe South Africa Bryoni Govender shared with fans that she will be taking a piece of home with her to the Miss Universe pageant in the form of a heritage-inspired national costume.

The Miss South Africa Instagram page explained that this year’s national costume – designed by Durban-based designer Casey Jeanne – has an African-Indian take to it, as Bryoni is of Indian descent. They added, “It was inspired by a sari and is adorned with traditional Zulu beads in a pattern inspired by an Ndebele print.”

Speaking about the design on Instagram, Casey shared, “We deliberately didn’t want an ostentatious, gaudy and over-the-top national costume for South Africa. But rather a high-fashion couture version that allows Bryoni to shine and shows South Africa’s skill on the world stage ?.”

She added that the dress was not flashy or huge but rather representative, making it the true definition of what a national costume should be about.
