Multi-award-winning musician and media personality Unathi Nkayi recently reminded us why she has multiple awards to her name, sharing a video performance of her much-loved song, A Mother’s Love Song.

November to December are important months to those who practice Xhosa cultural customs as these are preferred months to send boys through the passage of manhood, via initiation schools.

For mothers, this period can also be filled with mixed emotions as fear of the unknown often creeps in.

Singing A Mother’s Love Song in a video shared on her Instagram, Unathi sent her love and a message of support to mothers who will be sending their boys to initiation schools, assuring them they were not alone.

She captioned her post:

“MGIDI SEASON. I performed A MOTHER’S LOVE SONG on @umhlobowenenefm and dedicated it to ALL mother’s BUT especially ooMama ka Singaye (mothers of initiates) this season. A very emotional time for the mothers of Xhosa initiates. We are here for you. You are NOT ALONE. NABAZALELA IIZIDUKO ZABO (you gave the dads their clan name heirs) CAMAGU♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️.”
