‘I’m still traumatised’ – Emotional Connie Ferguson reflects on her last moments with Shona

After her husband passed away nearly 17 months ago, Connie Ferguson has opened up about how she was traumatised and how she is managing to cope with losing someone she had been “joined at the hip” with.

Shona Ferguson died at the Milpark hospital on July 30, 2021, at the age of 47 due to Covid-19 related complications.

Connie said it took her awhile to get out of that space of asking herself, “who am I without Sho?.”

“He and I were so close, initially joined at the hip. Even today just trying to live physically without him is a big adjustment.

“Every day there is something I wish I could do with him and he’s not there then I have to re-organise myself; adjust myself,” she added.

Connie said that the night after he had been discharged from the hospital impacted her heavily.

“I think I’m still traumatised from that night after he was discharged from hospital. Because he was strong he put on a front that he was strong enough to come home. That was the longest night of my life. Because I literally had to monitor his oxygen.

“That night he just got progressively worse. That night I was looking at my husband fading away from me,” she said.

Despite her pain, Connie is determined to carry on achieving the things she needs to.

“Grieving is ongoing. You just literally learn to live with the pain and not let it decapitate you. Life has to go on. I still have ambitions. I still have a company I need to run. There’s a lot still to be done, I think for me its unfortunate that I find myself in a position where I feel like I have to do it alone although I have a lot of support around me.

“It still feels alone without Sho, but I know he’s my biggest angel and I feel him a lot,” said Connie.
