Due to its worldwide popularity, TikTok has quickly become a hub where different social media challenges and trends thrive and recently, the ‘When you lie about your qualifications’ trend has quickly taken over South African TikTok.
When it comes to starting viral trends and challenges that go on to take over the continent or even the world, South African creators have proven to be second to none, as Mzansi constantly tops the list of trending sounds on TikTok and other social media platforms as well. Dance challenges such as Jealous and Ipati have kept the app buzzing, as creators from across the globe have hopped on the trend to reveal their personalised renditions.
Recently, South Africans have taken what was initially a somber moment, and turned it into a viral TikTok challenge, as they jokingly reveal what they had to go through after lying about their qualifications on their CV’s, and being asked to put those skills to use. These users have proven that creativity is at an all time high, as each video gets better and funnier than the previous one.
It appears that the Information Technology (IT) industry is responsible for the rise of the trend, as users first took to the app to reveal what they were asked to do at work, as a result of their IT qualifications, and then went on to expose how they dealt with the situation.
“When you lied about your IT qualifications and they tell you to make sure the file is saved,” one user’s caption reads, while they frantically pray for their flip file as a last resort to follow instructions.

Soon after, other industries such as medicine, hospitality, journalism and many more have hopped on the trend, and have made it one of the hot topics on social media, as some join in on the fun, and others react to their creativity.
