Former male sex worker Bongumusa known by many as Musa or Favent recently visited Chris Kunene’s podcast, Daily Hustle where he opened up about his rape ordeal by six men on the same evening.
Musa, now 28, detailed what it was like to be growing up in the rural part of KZN as a young gay boy. Originally from Estcourt, a town in the uThukela District of KZN, Musa shared that at first, he wasn’t aware that he was gay but he knew he was different from other male kids in his village.
It wasn’t until young Musa was introduced to television that he started understanding himself better, seeing that other men were dating one another.
In 2009 at the tender age of 13, the young boy ran away from home to live in the streets of Pietermaritzburg. He returned home in June, only to go back to the streets, this time moving to live in a shelter in Durban.
Upon settling in Durban, Musa shared that he was warned not to go to certain areas as there was an old man by the name of Somnyama who was well known for raping young boys on his own with his entourage.
Known as a very dangerous man, Somnyama was feared by many who lived around his area.
Musa later went back home and returned to the streets in 2012. It was at this time that he got to meet the feared man. Describing Somnyama, the former sex worker shared that he looked very dignified and decent and looked nothing like the things he was associated with.
Somnyama who told Musa to come live with him when they met, later went to look for him with his entourage when he didn’t pitch at his house.
After being forced into the house by the six men (Somnyama and his workers), Musa shared that he was asked to sleep as it was bedtime.
He refused and got a warning that he would be hurt if he didn’t corporate. He detailed that he got in the mattress that the old man was sleeping on and started hearing some of the crew debating who was going to be next after the old man was done.
Forcing himself on Musa, the old man finished giving way to five of his crew to satisfy themselves.
At some point Musa noted that he feels like he died in a way as his spirit disconnected from his body.
Now currently retired as a sex worker, Musa shared that he would like to be an agent that connects people with people.
“I want to believe that I am a retired sex worker now, I want now to be behind the scenes. I want to be someone who makes things done. When you want to shoot, I make that possible for you. When you want me to hook you up with a person, I want to be that person, not the person who goes to meet people, but who makes the meeting possible.”
