US comedian pokes fun at audience member on why his family ‘fled’ SA

Standup comedian Lucas Zelnick has made quite the name on the US comedy circuit scene. His punchy material often delves into topics that would make others uncomfortable.

Born and raised in New York, the 28-year-old internet personality doesn’t shy away from his privileged upbringing, which happens to be the focus of many of his punchlines.

During one of his recent shows, an audience member learnt the hard way of being the “object of his affection.”

When asked why his parents moved from South Africa, audience member Keegan said his parents were worried they “were gonna get murdered.”

Lucas asked Keegan if he knew what his parents were doing in South Africa, and received no response. The comic then gleefully said, “Your dad was bad. Just a little bad, wasn’t he?”

Continuing with his joke, Lucas referenced apartheid and added, “You put Black people in townships for 30 years and all of a sudden you’re persona-non-grata anymore.”

The ultimate insult came when he asked if wouldn’t it have been better if Keegan’s family moved to Israel. Despite asking numerous times what his parents did for a living while living in SA, Keegan refused to answer.

The post on X (formerly Twitter) quickly gained traction with 3.6 million views and 118K likes. The comments were just as hilarious.

“I LOVE white-on-white crime with passion”, commented @BrawlYash, to which @Cynstyle replied: “It’s my favourite genre of everything.”

Making fun of Keegan’s reason for fleeing the country, @Snohwie wrote: ‘“My grandparents fled Cuba from the revolution!’ Same kinda energy.”

On a serious note, @TheGeopol said: “Yt South Africans think they can fool the world into seeing them as victims of a crime they committed during apartheid. They can project all they like.”

No doubt Mzansi has found an ally in Lucas and maybe even gained a few thousand new followers after his show.
