The Mabalanes take fans behind the scenes of their HPV awareness campaign

Actress Gail Mabalane and rapper Kabelo Mabalane are running an awareness campaign informing people about the dangers of HPV and the importance of regular screening. Kabelo dropped a song titled Lalela Masithi HPV, which translates to “Listen when we say HPV” in English, as part of the campaign.

The making of the HPV awareness campaign

Gail posted a video sharing clips of Kabelo in the studio creating the song and shared important information about the disease.

“This HPV awareness campaign has made me realise that this is a shared responsibility,” said the star, expressing how important spreading awareness and normalising conversations about the disease is.

“The facts are sobering, making it clear why it’s time to raise the VOLUME.”

She also claimed that eight out of ten sexually active adults are predicted to contract HPV, and though it can resolve itself on its own, the risk of a persistent infection can lead to a detrimental outcome.

“HPV can lead to cervical, anal, vaginal, and vulval cancer,” she wrote, further noting that in men, the infection can cause genital warts in men and that 99% of cervical cases in women are linked to HPV infections.

Kabelo Mabalane’s latest track

“I think that creating this song definitely gave Kabelo the opportunity to bring the right feel, the right energy to carry the pain that made sure that everybody connects to this message,” Gail said about the song.

She highlighted the song as a banger with a collective purpose: “Of course it’s Kabelo who’s created yet another banger; however, this time for the collective greater purpose of an awareness campaign about the Human Papillomavirus a.k.a HPV,” she wrote, describing the important message behind the song.

Whilst acknowledging that HPV is a shared public health issue and that everyone has a shared responsibility in prevention, awareness and action, thus pointing out why this song belongs to the collective.
