Tyla’s Bold VMAs Outfit Splits Opinion Between the US and South Africa

South Africa’s pop sensation Tyla once again made waves at the 2025 MTV VMAs. Arriving at New York’s UBS Arena, she turned the red carpet into a stage of its own, wearing a vintage Chanel top from 1993 reworked into a micro-mini dress. She styled the look with Christian Louboutin heels and layered Pandora jewellery, creating a striking mix of vintage couture and modern sass.

The outfit was as daring as her music career has been. Tyla went on to collect her second VMA award, winning Best Afrobeats Song for Push 2 Start. With calm pride, she told the audience, “It’s a blessing to be here and to be winning another award.”

Americans Roast, South Africans Rally

The look quickly set social media alight. In the United States, online critics were harsh. Comments ranged from “These celebrities can’t dress” to a blunt “That’s a no for me.” For many American viewers, the dress seemed too skimpy for such a stage.

In South Africa, however, the response was entirely different. Fans praised Tyla’s boldness and celebrated her creativity. Supporters posted messages like “She is exactly who she thinks she is,” turning what could have been a controversy into a proud cultural moment.

More Than Just a Dress

Tyla’s outfit represented more than personal style. It challenged the idea of how African artists should present themselves on global stages. By choosing a piece of couture history and reworking it into something unexpected, she reminded the world that South African talent is innovative, fearless, and globally relevant.

The clash of opinions highlights how fashion can divide audiences but also confirms Tyla’s power to stay at the centre of conversations that matter. Whether roasted or celebrated, she continues to shape her own narrative and proudly fly the South African flag.

Why It Matters

For South Africans watching from home, Tyla’s night at the VMAs was about more than winning awards. It showed that she can stand tall on the biggest stages, spark global debate, and still keep her supporters close. Her outfit may have split opinions, but it cemented her status as one of the country’s brightest stars.
