Two years have passed since the shocking murder of Oupa “DJ Sumbody” Sefala. The musician who was best known for his popular tracks “Ayepyep” and “Monate Mpolaye,” was tragically gunned down in Sandton, north of Johannesburg, in November 2022 and his family’s journey for justice remains ongoing.

Despite the passage of time and continued efforts from law enforcement, DJ Sumbody’s family is still awaiting answers. Koketso Sefoka, DJ Sumbody’s brother, spoke to the DailySun about their ongoing challenges.

“It’s not easy, because we haven’t found closure as the case is still pending and a lot of things are happening,” Koketso said, “But we’re moving on.”

According to Daneloo, the South African Police Service (SAPS) recently provided an update on the investigations into the murders of DJ Sumbody and his friend Peter “Mashata” Mabuse. During a media briefing, the Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni revealed that the killers of both friends remain at large. “We’ve assigned Major-General Mbuso Khumalo to the investigation. We follow leads and will inform the public when we have a breakthrough. Yes, there are leads in relation to the two cases.”

Koketso further shared with the publication that the family has been dedicated to ensuring DJ Sumbody’s legacy endures. They are honouring him through several initiatives, including a golf day he used to host to raise funds for charity. Additionally, they are launching the DJ Sumbody Foundation, a project created by the Sefoka family and partners to drive change in entrepreneurship, education, and the arts.
