What a devasting time to be a Maltabella lover, as popular cereal and breakfast company Bokomo have revealed that they will be discontinuing the South African breakfast staple.

Originating in the early 1960s, Maltabella is described as a smooth sorghum that was inspired by African grain porridge. Due to its naturally high energy, carbohydrates and fibre, as well as its affordability and great taste, this dish has become a staple in many South African households.

Maltabella has also formed part of many childhoods and often brings feelings of nostalgia as most associate it with their youth and their time growing up. This is why the announcement of the product discontinuation has garnered massive backlash as South Africans voice their frustrations with Bokomo.

While the country mourns the loss, other users have been shocked by the number of people who still eat Maltabella. These users either expressed their long-time hatred for the porridge or revealed that they had forgotten about its existence due to not buying or seeing it around.

GOOD RIDDANCE??.
Tjer! I HATE this thing and I have not had it in more than 10years. It smells and tastes awful?

According to IOL, A Bokomo representative spoke to Independent Media Lifestyle, revealing that the discontinuation of the product was a result of their ongoing review of the product portfolio.

“We know that brands like Bokomo Maltabella have been household names that many South African consumers hold close to their hearts, so we can understand the disappointment that it is no longer available.”
