Attending a concert or festival can be an exhilarating experience, offering a chance to enjoy live music, connect with friends and immerse yourself in vibrant atmospheres.

However, a successful and enjoyable outing requires some thoughtful planning. To make the most of your event experience, here are key tips to consider before you go:

Purchase tickets in advance

Many concerts and festivals sell out quickly. Buying your tickets early ensures you secure your spot and often benefits from early bird discounts. Check official websites or authorised vendors to avoid counterfeit tickets.

Know the event details

Familiarise yourself with the event schedule, lineup, venue layout and opening/closing times.

Understanding the lineup helps you plan which acts to see, and knowing the schedule allows you to organise your day efficiently.

Plan your transportation

Determine how you’ll get to and from the venue. Consider options like public transportation, carpooling or parking facilities.

Arrive early to beat traffic and secure convenient parking if driving. Also, plan your departure time to avoid last-minute rushes.

Pack smart

Bring essentials such as your ID, tickets, cash or cards, a portable phone charger and any necessary medications.

If permitted, pack earplugs for noise-sensitive individuals or sunglasses for daytime events. Remember to check the venue’s bag policy.

Stay hydrated and nourished

Festivals can be physically demanding. If the rules permit, carry a refillable water bottle. If not, purchase water at the event to stay hydrated throughout the day.

Pack or plan to buy nutritious snacks to keep your energy levels up, especially if food options are limited or expensive.

Be mindful of safety and security

Follow venue rules and listen to staff instructions. Keep your belongings secure, and be cautious with alcohol consumption. Know where medical stations are located in case of emergencies.

Respect others and the environment

Be considerate of fellow attendees by respecting personal space and the venue’s rules. Dispose of litter responsibly and recycle when possible to help preserve the environment.

Upcoming events

Now that you know what to consider as you plan for the best experience, here are some upcoming events to look forward to:

Cape Town International Jazz Festival

Africa’s grandest gathering is back for its 23rd edition at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). The Cape Town International Jazz Festival will take place on March 27 and 28, 2026.

Music fans travel from around the globe to enjoy top-notch performances, cultural experiences, and everything else the city has to offer. This year’s headline act is Jacob Collier, who will take the stage at the Kippies Stage on Friday night. The seven-time Grammy winner is renowned for his dynamic live performances, which attract large crowds.

Local artists are still at the centre of the festival as this forms part of its identity. Acts like Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse will bring his signature rhythms to the line-up, with Nduduzo Makhathini returning and joined by special guests from Rehearsing Future Sounds. Nduduzo’s performances are always rooted in musical dialogue and experimentation, evolving the nature of modern jazz.
