Thebe Magugu Dazzles on Stage with Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean at DStv Delicious Festival

by Zaghrah Anthony

When South African Fashion Meets International Music

At the recent DStv Delicious International Food and Music Festival, South African designer Thebe Magugu’s creations stole the show, literally. American music legend Lauryn Hill and Haitian superstar Wyclef Jean graced the stage wearing Magugu’s striking designs, bringing Mzansi fashion to the global spotlight.

Hill wowed the crowd in a custom red-and-black suit featuring Magugu’s iconic TM Basotho Motif print, accented with red feathers from his new Mafeteng Capsule, launched in September. Wyclef Jean turned heads in the Sisterhood V-Neck Sweater, a midnight-blue wool-blend piece inspired by collegiate sportswear, detailed with white banding and the scaled-up Thebe Magugu sisterhood emblem.

A Stage History of African Fashion

Magugu isn’t new to the DStv Delicious Festival. Back in 2022, Nigerian superstar Burna Boy rocked a custom Thebe Magugu Sisterhood Bandana Technical Bomber paired with a matching crepe safari shirt, trimmed with dark red ostrich feathers. The festival has become a runway for top South African designers, proving that local fashion can captivate international audiences.

The festival’s fashion highlights didn’t stop with Magugu. African luxury brand MaXhosa Africa dressed Hill’s backing vocalists and dancers, reinforcing the power and reach of South African design on a global music stage.

From Kimberley to the World

Born in Kimberley, Thebe Magugu has quickly become a name to watch on the international fashion scene. In 2019, he became the first African designer to win the prestigious LVMH Prize, earning a €300,000 grant and a year-long mentorship with executives at the French luxury conglomerate. His designs seamlessly blend African cultural motifs with contemporary style, earning admiration from global stars and fashion critics alike.

Music and Family on Stage

Hill’s performance was more than just a fashion moment, it was a family affair. She shared the stage with her sons, YG Marley and Zion Marley, creating a memorable performance for festival-goers. Day two of the festival also showcased South Africa’s top musical talent, including Lira, Mandisi Dyantyis, Zoë Modiga, Oskido, and Joyous Celebration Rewind.

A Cultural Moment for South African Creativity

The DStv Delicious Festival continues to be a platform where music, food, and fashion converge. Thebe Magugu’s designs not only highlighted South African creativity but also underscored the growing global appetite for African luxury fashion. As Magugu and brands like MaXhosa Africa take center stage, it’s clear that South African style is making its mark on the world.
