‘The gentle soul with the kind heart’ – Costa Titch’s mother reflects on his life 2 years later

by Sergio Miller

It is often said that time heals. For Lara Langeveld, mother to the late Amapiano popstar Costa Titch, this statement could not be any further from the truth.

The loving mother and son shared a close bond, one that transcended time and space. However, nothing could have prepared her for the 11th of March 2023; the day she received the news that her vibrant son was no longer.

The 28-year-old, best known for his hit song Big Flexa, passed away during a live performance at the Ultra Music Festival in Johannesburg.

Video footage from the event showed the singer collapse during his performance before momentarily regaining his footing, but he collapsed again and died.

While it has now been two years since his tragic and sudden passing, it is the memories that continue to linger in Lara’s mind.

In a recent Instagram post, she shared a heartfelt post in reflection of the time they shared. Her post delved into some of their highest joys, but also her guilt for not being present in what may have been his darkest hour.

In a post which contained a picture of his younger version, she wrote:

“I miss you more than words could ever explain. Life has been so strange and surreal since you left us. The world still sees Costa Titch everywhere—your music, your name, your image—but not many see you, the boy we knew, the gentle soul with the kind heart, that infectious laugh, and those warm hugs we miss so much.

She further explained that his absence has been difficult for their family to digest, adding that while the rest of the world continue to hold on to his legacy and music, all they seek is his physical presence.

“You never chased fame. You chased purpose. You chased unity. You stood for love and positivity and gave youth something real to believe in.

“I’m sorry, my boy, for the loneliness and pain you carried. I feel guilty sometimes—raising you to love freely, to be kind, to be open. But part of me wonders… if you had just lived a “normal” life, a 9-to-5, out of the spotlight—maybe you’d still be here with us.”

She now finds comfort in knowing that he is in a much better place.
