From controversy to gratitude

Tebogo G Mashego, the 23-year-old Amapiano artist behind the hit Biri Marung, has once again found himself in the spotlight. Known for his outspoken personality and past clashes with fellow musicians, the singer recently shared a video thanking his fans for standing by him through his ups and downs.

In the clip, Mashego expressed appreciation for the support he has received since breaking into the industry, including during tough moments such as being stranded in Nigeria without a return ticket and his reported run-ins with the law.

The video was shared online by @TheAudioLabSA, and within hours, it was trending across social media.

Mzansi reacts: mixed feelings

While some applauded his bravery and honesty, others felt his moment of thanks fell flat.

Critics were quick to chime in:

  • “Nah, we’ve had enough of this boy. He can stop now.”

  • “It was a humiliation ritual. I just can’t prove it allegedly.”

  • “The boy is getting a young phuza face.”

Yet, many fans stood by him:

  • “I love his bravery. He’s still young and will one day be aligned to his purpose.”

  • “We forgive you boy boy. Your future is bright.” — DJ Sbu.

  • “I still believe what you said. Much love.”

The split highlighted how divisive Mashego has become in the music scene. Some continue to see him as a raw talent finding his way, while others are ready to move on.

A star with a rocky journey

Mashego’s name has become familiar for more than just his music. His heated words about industry giants like DJ Maphorisa made headlines earlier this year, sparking debate about whether he was brave or reckless. His alleged arrest and struggles abroad added to his reputation as a controversial figure.

Despite the setbacks, Biri Marung still cemented his place in the Amapiano wave, a genre that has carried many young South Africans from township studios to international stages.

A reminder of Mzansi’s tough love

The reaction to Mashego’s thank-you video reveals something uniquely South African. Fans are deeply invested in their stars, but they’re also brutally honest when they feel a musician has lost direction. Praise and criticism often sit side by side, and celebrities must learn to navigate both.

For Mashego, this moment may be less about silencing critics and more about showing resilience. Whether he wins back those who have written him off will depend on what he does next, in music and in how he manages his public image.
