Whether you are a fan of Chidimma Vanessa Adetshina or not, it is not hard to acknowledge her story and journey as one of resilience. From having her identity questioned by the nation she was born and raised in, to emerging out of the Miss Universe finale with three titles, Chidimma has fought for her place in history.

The name Chidimma Vanessa Adetshina might ring a bell to many, as she was unexpectedly thrust into the spotlight as a contestant in the Miss SA pageant. Her Nigerian names, which she was given by her father raised eyebrows among South Africans who felt as though Chidimma was not an accurate representation of the ‘rainbow nation’. This resulted in her subsequent withdrawal from the pageant, as she cited safety concerns, not only for herself but for her family as well.

Handing her a lifeline, Miss Universe Nigeria offered Chidimma a spot in the running towards holding the title, which she gladly accepted and went on to conquer. Her victory allowed her to compete in the Miss Universe finale, which is one of the biggest pageant stages in the world, allowing her to show the world who she really is after critics downplayed her Miss Universe Nigeria title as a pity win.

Chidimma ensured she went to Mexico fully prepared and confident, and her performance from her arrival in Mexico was indicative of that. She constantly showed up on multiple stand-out lists as her beauty, conviction and outgoing personality captured the hearts of many who were rooting for her. Her story of facing such adversity also garnered Chidimma much support from people who condemned the xenophobic actions she was recieving.

During the coveted Miss Universe finale, Chidimma came as close as one could get to snatching the crown which was won by Denmark’s Victoria Kjær Theilvig. After an extremely impressive performance, she finished as the first runner-up and the winner of the newly introduced Miss Africa and Oceania title as the highest-placing African contestant.

This victory etches Chidimma’s name in the history books as she becomes the first holder of this title.

Her speech that reads, “As a woman who has faced adversity, I feel like I have a powerful story. I don’t stand here as Chidimma Adetshina; I stand here as a symbol of hope, a beacon of faith. As someone who has persevered with grace, I believe I’ve fought for not only myself but for Africa!” resonated with many and sealed Chidimma’s place as one of the more memorable performances.
