Thobile Ngcamphalala is counted among the greats after her historical academic achievement of graduating with a Master’s degree in Topology with Distinction, leading to her being known as the second black woman to clinch this qualification from Rhodes University in 33 years.

What is inspiring about Thobile’s story is that she had to begin her studies through an extended curriculum programme, which is a route designed to support students who need more time and often comes with its own challenges. She conquered those challenges, using them as stepping stones to reach her ultimate dream. In doing so, she first completed her BSc Honours in Pure Mathematics with Distinction and then completed her Master’s degree in just one year.

Thobile is set apart from others even further as her research paper was published in Applied General Topology, a DHET-accredited academic journal, where she is listed as the first author. This publication marks yet another milestone in a growing list of achievements for the young academic.

Impressed by this achievement, her Master’s supervisor, Dr Mbekezeli Nxumalo, said: “Thobile’s story is one of perseverance, courage and brilliance. She set her own pace and broke new ground. It was a privilege to walk beside her through this journey.”

This is not the last stop for Thobile, as she plans to register for her PHD in Pure Mathematics later this year. “Her next chapter is already unfolding. From extended studies to published author. From underrepresented to unforgettable. Thobile, you didn’t just graduate- you made history,” read the statement.

The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training, Tebogo Letsie, also extended his heartfelt congratulations to Thobile on her remarkable academic achievement.

“This is truly inspiring news. It is encouraging to see young black women breaking barriers, pioneering in traditionally underrepresented fields and excelling at the highest academic levels,” said Tebogo.

“What makes Ngcamphalala’s achievement even more exceptional is that she began her journey through the extended curriculum programme, which is a support route designed for students requiring additional time. Her success is a testament to her resilience, determination and unwavering commitment to excellence,” he added.
